Immediately following the riots on Saturday afternoon, the police used many tactics of repression to ensure that all dissidents were overpowered. They raided spaces that people were staying, arresting anybody with black clothes. They attacked a jail solidarity demo on Saturday night. They illegally searched hundreds of people all over Toronto, arresting anybody who appeared like they might be a protester.

On Sunday, the police had cordoned off the whole neighbourhood around the meet-up park for the anti-prison demo, searching and arresting many people. Two busloads of SWAT team and riot cops were waiting at the Don Jail with armour and weapons. A helicopter circled over the park consistently all night Saturday and all day Sunday. There were hundreds, maybe over 1000 riot police on horses and in buses blocking off major streets near the park, with the most force on Queen St. E.

People were arrested for having banners, megaphones, wearing black pants, having black clothes and masks in their bags, etc. The entire neighbourhood was crawling with undercover pigs. This was the most effective and intense show of police force to prevent a demonstration from taking place that many of us have ever experienced. By the end of Sunday, the police had arrested over 1000 people. The disgusting conditions that people experienced in the temporary detention center nicknamed “Torontanamo” enrage us, but do not surprise us. We do not expect the police to treat people with respect when clearly their job is to violently repress, isolate, dehumanize, and control.

It is with a spirit of revolutionary solidarity that we continue a struggle against prison. Although it is disappointing that this demo did not happen, we are not defeated. This experience has only increased our motivation and fueled our desire to destroy the prison-world.

What: A Demonstration Against Prison. Anarchists are organizing this as a part of the larger mobilization in opposition to the G20 meetings.

Prison is everywhere; it is nothing more than a reflection of the society in which we live. It is a daily threat and reality that has permeated every facet of society. With the deepening of surveillance, the integration of police forces, the increased use of private security, the existence of courts, repression and isolation, the walls of prison are already built around us. If we don’t accept this miserable life offered to us, they’ll always have room for us in their overcrowded cells.

In the streets, prisons, psychiatric institutions, detention centres, there are those who do not come to peace with their exploitation. We desire to stand with comrades and accomplices who refuse to accept this reality, who refuse to be defeated by the System, who taste freedom in the ashes of prisons. We want to shed our fear and together confront the prison apparatus. We want to expand our solidarity in struggle against prison. We want people to join us and directly confront the systems of social control. We want to be everything prison isn’t: uncontrollable, joyful, creative…

We are encouraging people to come organized with intention, to make this project their own. Bring what you want to the demo: plans, noisemakers, banners, chants, and above all your passion for freedom. Confrontation is welcome.

Our chosen method of organization is informal. We are not “an organization”. We are friends, and our decision to organize together is based on existing relationships and a common project. We are a closed collective.

We don’t want to be involved in SOAR (Southern Ontario Anarchist Resistance) or TCMN (Toronto Community Mobilization Network), not because we are against them. We respect both organizations and their efforts in opposing the G20. We don’t want to go to the meetings or organize the actions and marches because we are working on our own initiatives in our own way. As individuals many of us are excited to attend these events and think it is important that they’re being organized. Our collective doesn’t attend the larger anti-G20 network meetings, not as a political stance or a boycott or whatever, but based on a different way of organizing.

All information that people need to know will be on the website, and disseminated through the internet and street promotion. We encourage people who have concerns, critiques, or contributions to this discussion to please email us or post comments.

It is up to you, as individuals, to find your own place within the Anti-Prison struggle, to decide for yourself if you are in solidarity with this project, and to act as you wish.

Prison is everywhere. It is nothing more than a reflection of the society in which we live. A society that resembles an open prison in which the majority of the population is locked up because of the necessity to find money, because of the lack of purpose in life, because of the roles of submission and servitude that are imposed by the ruling values. It is a daily threat and reality that has permeated every facet of society.

With the deepening of surveillance, the integration of police forces, the increased use of private security, the existence of courts, repression and isolation, the walls of prison are already built around us. If we don’t accept this miserable life offered to us, they’ll always have room for us in their overcrowded cells. The fear of being ripped apart from our loved ones and thrown into jail is what we measure, each day, against our existing servitude.

In the streets, prisons, psychiatric institutions, detention centres, there are those who do not come to peace with their exploitation, who do not bury a taste for freedom, for a better life, just because a judge imposes it. There are people who refuse the daily humiliation of obeying guards and bosses. For whom the walls and the barbed wire of the prisons are not yet marked in their brains but are taken as obstacles to overcome.

We desire to stand with comrades and accomplices who refuse to accept this reality, who refuse to be defeated by the System, who taste freedom in the ashes of prisons. We want to shed our fear and together confront the prison apparatus – the surveillance cameras, the police, the alienating consumer culture, the prison itself.

A question is often raised: what do we do with the murderers and rapists? In this question lies the assumption that the current system offers a solution. All the prisons have yet to “correct” the elements of society that breed this violence. Let us think instead about what we can do with each other, how we create communities of self-determination and autonomy that do not breed this rape culture through patriarchy, or genocide through racism.
